A new work of public art, featuring a howling coyote on a vintage Rhode Island postcard, has been created by students, alumni and the Visual Arts Department faculty of The Wheeler School as part of a new Thayer Street Public Art Project in Providence. A ribbon cutting for the work with artists, representatives from the City of Providence, and members of the Thayer Street District Management Authority, is set for 1 pm, Thursday, June 13 at 294 Thayer Street. The public is invited.

In search of a theme for the new Thayer Street mural proposal, the Wheeler Visual Arts department made use of earlier projects by the Wheeler Environmental Science department in an ongoing study of the growing coyote population in Rhode Island. Robert Martin, Chair of Visual Arts at Wheeler, said of the new artwork’s theme, “Our goal is to create a public display that will highlight the animal’s growing presence in our state through a juxtaposition of traditional views of the coyote from the Southwest (how most viewers might associate where coyotes live) with images from Rhode Island (where most viewers might not readily think of as a place where coyotes live). We chose the souvenir picture postcard as our vehicle and collage as our medium. We teach collage in many different guises throughout our curriculum and the project is well-suited for this medium of expression as it calls for a careful selection and repositioning of elements from different pictures to create a new composition” Photography students in the Wheeler Upper School Advanced Art Seminar combined several versions of Southwest and Rhode Island-based postcards using Adobe Photoshop. A website address for the Rhode Island-based CoyoteSmarts public information initiative is included in the mural to lead visitors to learn more.

“It is our goal for viewers of the proposed billboard to stop, take notice and wonder why a coyote in its “familiar” environment of the Southwest should be accompanied with a text that announces, ‘Greetings from Rhode Island,’ said Martin. “In the new mural, landmark views of the state are also contained within the block lettering, adding to the collaged-intention of colliding two previously unrelated frameworks: the southwestern landscape and the Ocean State: now united by the mutual habitation of the coyote and rendered large by the artful design of our students.”

Wheeler School Head Allison Gaines Pell said, “this type of creative undertaking engages our students as members of the neighborhood to create something that the nearby college and university communities, visitors and the whole City of Providence can enjoy. The hours of work to research, design and then create this new community landmark on Thayer Street is part of our academic mission to have students ‘learn their powers and be answerable for their use.’ We are delighted that Wheeler is able to add to the vibrant landscape of Thayer Street in a way that is both educational and joyful.”

Paul Griesinger, President of Capstone Properties said of the project, “We are thrilled to be working with The Wheeler School and the TSDMA to initiate the first art installation on Thayer Street. We hope to continue with other similar projects to bring art to the street in thought-provoking presentations.”

Donna Personeus, Executive Director of the Thayer Street District Management Authority, added, “TSDMA has been developing our Thayer Street Public Art Program for the past several years. It was always our goal to engage the community around Thayer Street in the process. In the Wheeler School, we have found the perfect partner for our public art program.”

Lead by Mandi Cai, Brown student and student organization, Artbeat with mentor, TSDMA Executive Director, Donna Personeus, Artbeat, secured two local artists to contribute to the first of many Thayer Street Pop-Up Window Art Exhibitions. The unveiling the exhibition “In Transition” is scheduled for Wednesday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m. at 271 Thayer Street (formerly City Sports) during the Thayer Street Holiday Stroll.

“In Transition” is an exhibition about Providence’s street art scene and its movement through different spaces.. All art can be seen as ephemeral in nature, on display for a period of time and then stored away somewhere private only to be appreciated by a select few. Street art permeates the vacant buildings, piles of rubble, and lonely brick walls to convey a message of its own. The art is not confined to space, instead embracing the space that it finds itself in. The spray paint’s lifespan is at the mercy of the wrecking ball, but the sheer irony that its beauty comes from eventually being destroyed is what makes street art hauntingly beautiful.

The exhibition features two local artists, Linda Handel, digital photographer, and Providence artist Nick Guilbert. The window gallery exhibition will be unveiled on December 2nd and stay up until the empty building begins its transition into another business, or until January 31, 2016.

The Bike Repair Station funded by the Thayer Street District Management Authority (TSDMA) officially opens for public use after Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony November 9th officially opened the new Bike Repair Station in the Thayer Street District to the public. Located on the side of the Brown University Bookstore on Olive Street, corner of Olive and Thayer, the Bike Repair Station includes specialized bicycle repair tools and an air pump. The Bike Repair Station is the newest improvement to the District funded by the TSDMA. Legend Bicycle shop located on Brooke Street has entered into a maintenance sponsorship agreement with the TSDMA to assure the station will be repaired and tools replaced if necessary.

The idea of installing a bike repair station on Thayer started more than 20 months during a meeting between TSDMA Executive Director, Donna Personeus and Eric Weiss of City of Providence Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Commission & East Coast Greenway Alliance, when Mr. Weiss shared his wish list for Thayer which included a bicycle repair station. The TSDMA relied on the expertise of both Mr. Weiss and Mr. Madden, owner of Legend Bicycle in the selection of the ideal repair station that would both serve the needs of neighborhood recreational bike riders and avid area cyclists. Brown University was instrumental in providing a secure location that would allow the station to be open to cyclists year round as well as protected by video surveillance. “The Bike Repair Station is a great example of teamwork and how positive improvements can happen when people and organization come together to support their community” stated TSDMA Executive Director, Donna Personeus.

The Thayer Street District Management Authority (TSDMA) was established by Thayer Street property owners and granted status to operate as a ‘Business Improvement District’ by the City of Providence Code of Ordinances and in accordance with RI General Law 45-59-14(b) in January 2006. The District is comprised of the area bounded by Bowen Street, Brook Street, Waterman Street and the rear lot line of parcels that face the western side of Thayer Street. Over the years since our establishment, the district has undertaken the installation of new sidewalks, stamped crosswalks, trash cans, lighting, trees, recycling programs, daily sidewalk cleaning, trash and graffiti removal. In 2013, the City of Providence’s Department of Planning & Development worked with a consultant team and members of the TSDMA to prepare a plan for the future of the District. The Final Thayer Street Planning Study is now available online. TSDMA is governed by a Board of Directors made up of District property owners, merchants and representatives of Brown University. Day to day operations are overseen by our TSDMA Executive Director.
